African American Library at the Gregory School
City of Houston, Houston Public Library · Houston, Texas
This historic 1926 Gregory School in Freedmen’s Town was transformed into the African American Library, one of Houston Public Library’s two dedicated research centers. The adaptive reuse project converted the former elementary school into a two story exhibit, archival, and research facility, anchored by a new 2,000 square foot structural glass lobby that showcases the original façade.
The project earned multiple design awards from AIA Houston and the Texas
Historical Society.
