Smith & Company Architects was founded in 1999 by founder and Principal Architect Terry Smith AIA NOMA. Spring boarded by small school and housing commissions completed on a living room PC, the firm has grown and survived for two decades with a team of talented committed design professionals providing our clients with superior service not often found in a firm of our size and background.
Having completed award winning projects of all types, we have grown especially adept at educational buildings and multi-family housing developments. We work hard to stay ahead of the latest trends in K12 school design, collegiate facilities and campus planning, and housing models for both market rate and affordable and senior tenants. We are a generalist firm, possessing the ability to respect the culture and needs of the client with the context of the communities in which we build. Therefore, as you will see from our project portfolio, we do not conform to a certain signature style, but rather strive to push the envelope within the parameters that are set by our client’s goals and objectives. We delight in designing signature buildings that are beautiful, functional, and successful, while simultaneously developing long standing personal relationships with our clients.
In the increasingly competitive practice of architecture, our office competes successfully with larger firms by partnering with clients who seek big-firm capabilities, but with a small-firm focus. Our relationship-based approach caters best to those clients that are forward and progressive thinking and not bound by the historical image of how society defines an “architect” or “architectural firm”. While we are a minority owned firm, we possess the same, and in many cases, better qualifications and abilities provided by any firm that has been in business for more than two decades. We strongly disagree with any limiting connotation that being a “minority owned” firm might bring and actually pride ourselves on accepting commissions for and designing projects that give us the opportunity to exercise our true abilities.
