Relevant Experience

Terry is President and Founder of Smith & Company Architects, having founded Smith & Company in 1999 after working as Managing Principal at a large national AE firm. While with his previous firm, Terry participated in the design of such notable projects as the Harris County Criminal Justice Center, the Harris County Civil Courts, and the Jesse H. Jones School of Business and Spurgeon Grey Hall School of Pharmacy at Texas Southern University.

After relocating to Florida to manage the firm’s Tampa office, Terry began his relationship with local school districts and housing organizations completing successful school projects and housing developments across west Florida. He also performed programming and schematic design services for the Master Plan Update for the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority and he also led the development of a six phase master plan for the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority at Vandenburg Airport including projects at Tampa International Airport. Establishing his own office first with an elementary school addition in Tampa, the firm was quickly relocated to Terry’s hometown of Houston in order to contribute to the growth and expansion of some of the same areas and neighborhoods of his childhood.

Terry’s ties to his professional and local community run deep. He has served as a board member for numerous professional and community organizations including a 3-year term on the AIA Houston Board of Directors where he received a Presidential Citation for servicing as Chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee. He served as an Executive Trustee on the Texas Architects Committee responsible for increasing awareness at the Texas Legislature of political issues facing architectural firms in Texas. Terry served on the Board of Directors for the Houston Texans YMCA, ultimately serving as a key designer of the new facility built in 2009. He served most recently as President of the Houston chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects during the organizations national conference hosted in Houston. As the sole owner of the largest local wholly owned African American architectural firm in Houston, Terry has also contributed to the development and awareness of the profession to future minority architects and has spoken at elementary schools as well as colleges of architecture including the College of Architecture at Prairie View A&M University, where he was educated and granted his degree. In 2008 his firm was recognized as one of the Houston Minority Business Council’s Emerging Ten, which recognizes companies that make significant contributions to their industry and community.
